Eco-friendly packaging are an important step forward
For years, we've been watching what happens to "wonder" plastics when they're not handled properly. Oceans and beaches are littered with plastic waste these days, and walking around town makes it hard to see plastic waste in streets, parks and water systems. This is one of the most useful aspects, durability, which actually becomes our worst enemy because for example plastic bottles take a long time to degrade.
Rapid changes in how people perceive plastic, which is now seen more generally as a cheap and fragile alternative to real materials. While we can't deny its incredible uses, we can't go back to using natural products without putting more pressure on nature. The real solution is to create robust procedures to ensure that all plastics are properly disposed of through recycling and reuse.
Modern recycling programs are indeed a boon, but they are not perfect, and most of the plastic still ends up in landfills, and even worse for the environment. That doesn't mean we shouldn't enforce it, as we've seen in this short history, we can always find a solution to a problem, and I bet we'll have a way to fix it in the future.
