Why won’t packaging tape stick in cold temperatures?
Why won’t packaging tape stick in cold temperatures?
Different types of adhesives behave differently when exposed to temperatures below freezing. The adhesive used to seal cartons is viscoelastic, which means that it has both liquid and solid properties. Because of this, when exposed to lower temperatures, adhesives become brittle, like glass, rather than remaining soft and pliable. Without the right consistency, the adhesive loses the tackiness that allows it to bond.
The first factor to consider is the ambient temperature at which the tape will be applied to the carton, or the application temperature. In order to form a strong bond, wiping pressure is required to help the adhesive flow in and establish a bond with the corrugated fibers of the carton. The liquid component of the adhesive allows it to flow, create tack and grip things, so when low temperatures harden the adhesive, it loses its ability to flow and establish a secure bond. This is why traditional tapes become ineffective when the temperature drops.
Knowing the environment in which the sealed carton will be stored or the temperature at which it will be used is also key. If a sealed carton is stored at low temperatures before the adhesive has had time to form a permanent bond with the carton, the adhesive becomes brittle and loses its adhesion, causing the tape to fail.
