The science of carton sealing
The science of carton sealing
A detailed study by SGS North America produced compelling statistics. The company obtained 1,300 cardboard boxes and spent two full working days sealing them - one day with water-activated tape and the other with plastic tape. Results were provided in multiple areas, including:
productivity
Compared to a hand-held tape gun with plastic tape, carton sealing was 21% more efficient using the gummed paper tape dispenser and water-activated tape.
tape integrity
The cartons sealed with paper tape were undamaged and tamper-proof; those sealed with plastic tape were not secure and were easily accessible with no signs of tampering. The integrity of the tape can be maintained in a variety of environments, including high humidity, low temperature and dust.
adhesion
Tests have proven that the adhesive tape has excellent adhesion and therefore safe packaging. When the adhesive tape was removed from the carton, it also removed 80% of the fibers from the carton, showing its strength and evidence of tamper resistance. The plastic pressure sensitive tape adhered poorly and was easily removed from the carton without any signs of tape being removed.
material usage
The average amount of tape required to seal a single carton with water-activated tape is 8% less than with plastic tape (when using a single piece of plastic tape).
In short, water-activated paper tape outperformed plastic tape on four criteria that are critical to efficient and effective carton sealing and packaging operations.
